When should I start baby sign language?

You can start whenever you’d like—many families begin around 6–9 months, but it’s never too early to start modeling signs. Some parents even begin from birth to build the habit. Just like talking, your baby may not respond right away, but they’re learning and taking it all in.

How long before my baby starts signing back?

Every baby is different. It depends on your baby’s interest in communicating, their development, and how consistently signs are modeled. Most babies begin signing between 10–14 months, though they understand signs much earlier. If you start younger, it may take a little longer to see those first signs, but once your baby makes the connection, progress often happens quickly.

Will baby sign language delay speech?

No. Research shows that using signs does not delay speech. In fact, it can support and enhance language development. Signing gives babies a way to communicate early, which often builds confidence and encourages spoken language as they grow.

What signs should I start with?

Start with signs you can use every day during natural routines. Some great first signs include MORE, MILK, EAT, ALL DONE, and HELP. Using signs consistently during real-life moments helps your baby make meaningful connections.

Do I need to know American Sign Language (ASL) to teach my baby?

No. You don’t need to be fluent in ASL to get started. The Baby Signs® Program introduces simple, practical signs that are easy to learn and use in everyday situations.
