The Heart of the Baby Signs® Program: Inside Michelle Cromeenes’ Journey

A Family’s Life-Changing Discovery

When Michelle Cromeenes and her husband enrolled in a Baby Signs® Parent Workshop, their twins were just 4.5 months old. Little did they know that this single decision would spark a lifelong passion. By 7.5 months, their twins were signing back, and after their first birthday, they were learning nearly a new sign every day. Witnessing how signing could drastically improve communication and nurture her children’s confidence inspired Michelle to dive deeper into the Baby Signs® Program—and share its life-changing benefits with families around the world.

From Personal Triumph to Professional Calling

Armed with a background in early childhood from UC Davis and over 30 years of experience in training and supporting adults, Michelle discovered her true calling in helping families and professionals through the Baby Signs® Program. Today, she stands at the forefront of an international network of certified instructors, overseeing training and offering ongoing support to both new and veteran Baby Signs® educators in over 40 countries.

Empowering Families and Professionals

Michelle’s dedication extends beyond teaching parents how to sign with their little ones. Drawing on more than 25 years of experience in management, franchise support, and business operations, she has reintroduced the two-day in-person instructor certification and offers Early Childhood Educator training for large agencies. These initiatives ensure that instructors and educators alike are well-prepared to bring the Baby Signs® message of early communication to their communities.

Why the Baby Signs® Program Makes a Difference

The Baby Signs® Program teaches hearing babies to use simple signs to communicate their wants, needs, and feelings long before they can speak. This early communication:

  • Reduces Frustration: When babies can express themselves, fussiness and tantrums decrease.
  • Strengthens Bonds: Parents gain deeper insight into their baby’s thoughts, fostering meaningful connections.
  • Boosts Development: Numerous studies (including federally funded research) show enhanced cognitive, social-emotional, and language development in babies who sign.

As Michelle explains, “It’s amazing to see how something as simple as teaching a baby to sign can completely transform the way families communicate. It truly is one of the best gifts you can give to your family.”

Stories That Inspire

One of the most rewarding parts of Michelle’s work is hearing real-life success stories. From a baby signing “more” during mealtime to a caregiver witnessing their little one’s first attempts at “milk,” each milestone brings moments of pride, joy, and profound connection. “I’m constantly inspired by the dedication and passion of our certified instructors,” Michelle says. “Their stories remind me why I fell in love with the Baby Signs® Program in the first place.”

Getting Started with the Baby Signs® Program

For families or professionals eager to begin, Michelle suggests starting with a few simple, practical signs—like “milk,” “more,” “all done,” and “eat”—and using them consistently in your daily routine. If you need extra guidance, she recommends finding a certified Baby Signs® instructor near you and taking a class or workshop. “Get started signing with your baby right away, and never hesitate to reach out for resources or support,” Michelle adds.
