Supporting Early Communication in Richland, WA: A Look Inside Our Baby Signs® Workshops
Last week, we had the privilege of facilitating two Baby Signs® workshops at the Children’s Developmental Center in Richland, Washington—one for professionals and one for families. Both were part of our mission to bring the powerful, research-based benefits of early communication to children and caregivers alike.
The first session was a Baby Signs® Workshop for Professionals, attended by an inspiring group of speech-language pathologists, early interventionists, occupational therapists, and family resource coordinators. Together, we explored how the Baby Signs® Program supports language, cognitive, and social-emotional development in children from birth to age three.

Attendees learned:
- How and when to introduce signs to babies and toddlers
- The research behind the program’s impact on brain development
- Practical strategies for incorporating signs into daily routines
- Over three dozen of the most useful signs for everyday use
- Fun and engaging activities to use with families, including songs and games
All participants left with comprehensive resources—complete with handouts in English and Spanish, posters, activity ideas, and professional articles—to help integrate Baby Signs® into their work immediately.

Later that evening, we welcomed families served by the Children's Developmental Center for a Baby Signs® Parent Workshop, where parents and caregivers learned the basics of signing and how to get started at home. It was heartening to see parents excited about reducing frustration, understanding their children better, and building strong bonds through early communication.

Both workshops reinforced why this program is such a powerful tool in early intervention. Whether you're a therapist, a teacher, or a parent, the ability to understand what a baby is thinking or feeling—even before they can talk—can be life-changing.
Why This Matters for Early Intervention Agencies
The Baby Signs® Program is the original sign language program for hearing babies, backed by over two decades of research and experience. It is used by agencies and organizations around the world—including the U.S. Department of Defense—and continues to be a trusted tool for supporting child development.
Nonprofit organizations, early intervention programs, and early childhood centers that adopt this program not only empower their staff and families but also elevate the quality of services they provide.
