Welcoming Spring with the Baby Signs® Program
Fresh Ideas to Help Your Baby Learn and Grow This Season
Spring is in the air! Flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and the world seems to be waking up from winter’s chill. This season of renewal is also the perfect time to refresh your baby’s learning experiences.
By introducing spring-themed signs and playful activities, you can help your little one strengthen communication skills while enjoying everything that makes spring so special. Whether you are exploring the outdoors, reading together, or getting creative with art projects, simple signs can turn everyday moments into meaningful learning opportunities.
Spring Signs to Teach Your Baby
Try incorporating these simple, seasonally inspired signs into your daily routine. Remember to pair each sign with the spoken word and lots of encouragement:
Flower
Bring your fingertips together, then touch them to your nose as if smelling a flower. Use this sign whenever you point out fresh blooms in the garden or on walks.

Sun
Circle your dominant hand above your head, then open and close it like a shining sun.
Bird
Pinch your thumb and index finger together near your mouth (like a beak opening and closing).
Rain
Hold both hands up, fingers spread, and wiggle them downward to mimic raindrops.
Rainbow
Move your hand in an arc in front of your body, tracing the shape of a rainbow.
Use this sign when you see a rainbow after a spring rain or when reading books about weather and colors.
Butterfly
Cross your thumbs and gently flap your fingers like wings.
You can use this sign when you see butterflies in the garden or while reading books about insects and nature.
Springtime Activities with a Signing Twist
Nature Walk “I Spy”
- What You’ll Do: Head outdoors and look for seasonal sights—flowers, birds, blue skies, and rain puddles.
- How to Incorporate Signs: Each time you see something spring-related, pause to use the corresponding sign and say the word out loud.
Flower Planting

- What You’ll Do: Plant some seeds or potted flowers with your baby’s “help.”
- Signing Tip: Encourage your child to use the “flower” sign as they watch the blossoms grow, and talk about the magic of new life.
Spring Storytime
- What You’ll Do: Read books featuring gardens, sunshine, and animals.
- Signing Tip: Whenever you come across a word you’ve been signing (like “sun” or “bird”), pause to demonstrate the sign.
Raindrop Art
- What You’ll Do: Use blue paint or markers to make “raindrops” on paper. Get creative with cotton balls for clouds!
- Signing Tip: Show the sign for “rain” while your child dabs or splatters the paint. It’s messy fun that ties directly into language learning.
