What little hands can say

When Toddlers Sign: Surprising, Sweet & Smart Stories

The magic of infant sign language continues to shine through real stories from parents and caregivers across the country. In this second volume of Sunday Signing Stories, we highlight more heartfelt and humorous moments where Baby Signs® helped children share what they saw, how they felt, or simply what they needed—long before they could speak.

🕊️ No Mom, Over Here!

"Even the elephants couldn’t compete with sparrows underfoot."

At the zoo, 12-month-old Katie surprised her mom by signing “BIRD” instead of marveling at the elephant nearby. Sure enough, she had spotted tiny sparrows pecking at seeds under the elephant's belly. It was a perfect reminder that babies see the world in their own wonderful way—and with signs, they can tell us about it.

💥 A Low Blow that Paid Off

"He signed 'Hot!' before I realized his feet were burning."

My son Keegan, about 14 months old, loved the baby pool. One day as we walked away, he started crying. I assumed he didn’t want to leave—but then he frantically signed “HOT.” We had stepped onto concrete, and his little bare feet were burning. That sign saved him from further pain—and me from misinterpreting his needs.

Fly Like An Eagle

"She signed 'Bird' and pointed to herself—she felt like she was flying."

At 15 months old, Olivia was swinging at the park when she suddenly signed “BIRD.” I looked around for one, but she shook her head and signed “BIRD” again while pointing to herself. That’s when I got it—she felt like a bird flying. What a profound and joyful insight into her imagination.

I Told You So!

"She signed 'Hurt' and pointed to her ear—no fever, but yes, an infection."

When 14-month-old Maddie woke up crying unusually, I went in to check on her. She signed “HURT” and pointed to her left ear. The doctor confirmed an ear infection, even without a fever. He was stunned we knew—and became a signing believer on the spot.

Thank Goodness He Could Sign!

"The same doll he loved during the day terrified him at night."

Zach adored his clown doll—until one night it scared him from the dresser. He signed “AFRAID” repeatedly. If he couldn’t sign, I might have assumed he wanted it back and placed it in his crib. That sign saved him from more distress—and helped me comfort him better.
